Surijomukhi

Surjomukhi,,a fair trade organisation, was established in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1994. Surjomukhi a Bengali word, is the symbol of joy, happiness and laughter. The mission of Surjomukhi has been to provide a stable and gainful source of employment for people from underprivileged rural tribes, widows and other women living in poverty. A number of Surjomukhi’s artisans belong to the Garo tribe, about 60kms north of Dhaka. Forced into the city to seek employment, these people with little or no education, face discrimination in the job market and struggle to survive.

Working the Surjomukhi, the women receive a regular monthly wage, work in an environment with good lighting and ventilation and also receive medical assistance if needed. The artisans also have the option of working from home. It is hoped hat once trained, the artisans will be able to pass on their skills to other people in the community.
